At the outbreak of the First World War, there was a need to recruit volunteers to join the army and fight. Many of these volunteers were put into what was called ‘Pals Battalions’. These battalions were made up of soldiers all from the same area, as it was hoped this would boost volunteer sign up and help with fighting spirit if soldiers are fighting with people whom they may already know. Watch the video about the Leeds Pals to discover their journey and the effect the Pals Battalions had at the front and back home.
